A homage to the 50th anniversary of rapid single-firing: a process patented by Marazzi in 1974 that enabled the simultaneous firing of the tile body and the finishing glaze, slashing production times and energy use. This technology redefined the image of what constituted a tile, and opened the way to research into the performance properties of industrial ceramics. So now, to celebrate the history and technology of ceramics, the Crogiolo range is extended to include the Terramater collection, in red-body porcelain stoneware. The development process for the new tile body mix, which consists of raw materials of Italian origin and 60% recycled material, took about two years.
The new collection’s glazes, grits and natural oxides fuse with the red clay during firing to create irregular, burnished effects that evoke the ceramic firing processes of the distant past, in which the lead and selenium present used to produce reddish streaks like scorch-marks on the edges and ridges of the surface. Re-created today for Terramater, they give the product a familiar, hand-crafted ‘feel’ evoking fond memories.
This timeless aesthetic is also supported by the assortment of seven intense, deep colours – Vaniglia, Dune, Muschio, Lichene, Laguna, Cotto and Carbone – similar to those used in ceramic tiles from the ‘70s, and the vintage effect is maintained in the dimensions used. The modular sizes – 37.5×37.5 cm, 18.6×37.5 cm and 9.1×37.5 cm, meaning one square and two rectangles with base 37.5 cm – enable a wide choice of compositional options, for constructing vibrant walls with imaginative use of the tiles’ uneven, burnished edges and the joints between them.
This richness of installation is reinforced by two three-dimensional structures, Ritmo and Losanga. The former, in 18.6×37.5 cm size, consists of a single module with lines parallel to the short side. Tiles can be installed parallel for an uneven striped effect or turned through 180° for a more unusual decorative pattern. The second structure is available in 9.1×37.5 cm size and features a motif in classical style. It can be installed either vertical or horizontal, parallel or staggered, to generate a pattern that expands or contracts.
Terramater is a collection with a strong decorative identity that fuses tradition and innovation. It is a sensual product with a warm tactile appeal, ideal for creating inviting, comfortable interiors.
