Crogiolo Lume, in Green colour, was installed to construct the building envelopes in an urban regeneration project in Vienna. Residential buildings with high indoor comfort and low environmental impact, in which the team of architects and the landscape designers worked with a special focus on the tactile and sensory dimension.
The new residential complex was constructed on the former Beiersdorf site on Laxenburger Straße.
An urban regeneration operation carried through in partnership between S+B Gruppe AG and C&P Immobilien AG for the real estate development and u.m.a. architektur ziviltechniker GmbH for the architectural design.
The zone is strategically located for links to the rest of the city and surrounding area and enjoys a particularly attractive landscape.
In view of the neighbourhood’s high population density, particular care was taken over the design of the new block, to make the residential complex at Laxenburger Straße 151 unique. Famous Austrian actor and multimedia artist André Heller was called in to cooperate on the project, designing both the garden and the green areas of the squares and along the street.
All the residential units have private outdoor areas, balconies and terraces, and high indoor quality comfort levels. The complex was designed with a particular focus on environmental sustainability, with the integration of various innovative solutions to reduce ecological impact.
Amongst these solutions, Baumit thermal insulation plays a crucial role, ensuring that the building is effectively insulated and significantly reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling.
The thermal break windows and doors and insulating glazing helped to improve energy efficiency even further by minimising heat loss and improving indoor comfort.
The building’s “skin” of Green colour Crogiolo Lume porcelain stoneware tiles was installed over this facade system. This choice was fully attuned to the work of the architects and the landscape design team on the areas’ sensory character and emotional power, a criterion which played a major role when selecting the materials.
Thanks to its production technology and in-depth research into glazes and colour, Crogiolo transfers all the beauty of hand-made majolica brick tiles to porcelain stoneware. With intense colours, glossy surfaces and a rediscovered balance between imperfection and perfection, the architectural firm created vibrant surfaces with an intensity that can be both seen and felt.
A product certified by Greenguard for its low harmful substance emissions and Declare for the absence of chemicals harmful to health, frost-proof and resistant to deep abrasion, Crogiolo Lume can be used to create artisan-effect coverings, offering a contemporary take on the distinctive characteristics of ceramics in their purest form.
The regeneration of the former Beiersdorf site, with many green and communal areas, succeeded in its aim of improving the local air quality and microclimate while providing residents with new spaces for socialisation and wellbeing. The synergy between these aspects makes the complex a fine example of sustainable architecture, combining outstanding design, functionality and environmental protection.
