The Challenge of the Circular Economy

Reading time: minutes

Circular economy is a fundamental approach for achieving environmental sustainability. It is based on the recovery, regeneration and reuse of materials and resources with the goal of reducing waste and refuse, and preserving natural resources. We have developed a closed-cycle production model which involves the use of production scrap, recovery of packaging, process wastewater and the excess heat generated in various production phases such as firing.

Environmental quality criteria are applied to the entire manufacturing cycle, limiting consumption of natural resources and environmental impact, through the restoration of quarries’ landscape and vegetation, controlled waste management, the optimisation of energy consumption and the recycling of industrial wastewater.

Recycled Paper and Packaging and Environmentally Friendly Printers

The production of traditional packaging requires significant resources, including oil, energy and water. By using packaging obtained from recycled materials, we are able to reduce the quantity of materials ending up in landfill, energy consumption, and the resources required to produce new packaging.

Our packaging is 100% recycling, and our pallets are also manufactured with wood from forests certified pursuant to the FSC system (Forest Stewardship Council, in other words wood from correctly managed and traceable sources. Even the paper used for our general catalogues has FSC certification, is 100% recycled and has allowed 2,450 trees to be saved in 2023 alone.

Use of cutting-edge printers in all offices represents a further step towards responsible use of resources. In 2023, 180 new machines have been installed which provide reduced environmental impact thanks to lower CO2 emissions and reduced energy consumption: on the one hand, the toner cartridges for these printers are smaller, meaning less waste to dispose of; on the other, the printing is faster and allows more pages to be printed with less energy.
In purchasing these printers, Marazzi Group is also supporting global, certified reforestation projects.

100% Process Waste Recovered

Production of tiles generates a certain portion of waste material, inert waste which would generally be sent to landfill, wasting energy and transport. Our technology allows us to recover 100% of fired and unfired waste scraps from tiles rejected due to defects or breakages, grinding everything which was previously considered waste back up into the raw materials.

Waste Recycling

A total of 99.6% of waste deriving from the production process and maintenance is consigned to specialist firms for recycling. Only 0.4% of all waste generated within the company ends up landfills.
